What’s Ahead for Drake?

The Drake men’s track and field squad will compete in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 at the UNI Dome. Start time for action on both days is 9:30 a.m.

  • Last Time Out: Junior Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) was second in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.15 to lead the Drake men’s track and field squad at the Iowa Invite on Friday, Feb. 15.
  • The Drake ‘A’ 4×400-Meter Relay, anchored by junior Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.) won the event in 3:17.92.
  • The freshmen pair of Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Scott Goad (Dixon, Ill.) had a strong showing in the high jump. Cook was second with a leap of 6-6.50 while Goad was fourth, passing the bar at 6-3.50.
  • Junior Alex Kaster (Omaha, Neb.) was third in the triple jump. His jump of 45-0.25 bested teammate freshman Sean Buczek (Crystal Lake, Ill.) who leaped to 43-3.00.
  • Senior Mike Rodriguez (Chanhassen, Minn.) was fifth in the 3,000 meters, crossing the line in 9:00.69. Freshman Ali Jandal (La Crosse, Wis.) was seventh in 9:04.05.
  • Jandal’s high school teammate Jim Saxton (La Crosse, Wis.) was third in the 800 meters in 1:56.89. Fellow freshmen Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas), 22.79, and Julian Todd-Borden (Carlsbad, Calif.), 23.04, were fourth and eighth respectively in the 200 meters.
  • Sophomore Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) was third in the 400 meters in 50.02.
  • A Year Ago: Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) continued a fantastic season winning the 5,000-meter crown to lead the Drake contingent at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship.
  • The Bulldogs finished fifth overall with 74.50 points. Southern Illinois won the meet with 142.50 points.
  • Austin, who had won the MVC cross country title earlier in the season, crossed the line in 14:24.88 to become the first men’s athlete at Drake to win the indoor 5,000 meters at Drake.
  • Austin’s teammates claimed fourth through sixth in the mile. Omet Kak (Des Moines, Iowa) and Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in a time of 4:16. Kak barely edged his teammate in 4:16.184, while Lapham was .005 behind in 4:16.189. Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) was sixth, crossing the line in 4:18.15.
  • Austin and Kak finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 meters. Austin’s time of 8:35.05 was less than a second behind the winner, Tomas Cutter, while Kak crossed the line in 8:35.09.
  • Lapham was fifth in the 800 meters final in 1:55.47.
  • Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) was second in the 400 meters finishing in 48.73 and sixth in the 200 meters, clocking in at 22.35. Brett Wright was fifth in the 400 meters in 49.50.
  • Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) claimed second in the long jump, soaring 23-10. He also recorded a mark of 48-1.75 in the triple jump to tie for fourth place.
  • Karys and teammates Travis Marsh, Shaun James, and Wright were fourth in the 4×400-meter relay in 3:18.35.
  • The distance medley squad of Brady, Marsh, Lapham, and Matt Jurysta was third in 10:17.56.

Up Next: Drake athletes will compete in a host of different ‘last chance’ meets in a final attempt to gain a national qualification time for the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 8 and 9.
