UNI Finds Success at ISU Classic

The University of Northern Iowa track and field program completed the final day of the Iowa State Classic, ending the successful meet with strong performances across the board.

“This was a big weekend for us,” head coach Dan Steele said. “The kids are rounding into championships shape. Now we just need to stay the course.”

The men’s 4X400 meter relay team of Jordan Guske, WDM Valley, Jesse Davenport, SE Polk, Marshall Hill and Sheldon Magee finished second in their heat. Their season-best time of 3:14.02 kept them safe in first place in the MVC.

Kelsey Sukovaty, Manson NW Webster, set a new indoor personal record in the seeded women’s shot put with a throw of 50-00.75. Her distance of 50-00.75 keeps her in second place all-time at UNI in the event.

The men’s sprint crew competed in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash today, with both Derek Kramer, CR Xavier, and Sebastian Barth finishing in the top-five of the event. Kramer placed fifth in the finals of the 60 meter dash coming away with a time of 6.91 while Barth finished tied for fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.03.

, competed in the women’s seeded 400 meter run, posting a season-best time by over two seconds. She finished the race fifth in her heat with a time of 55.76.

The Panthers had two athletes qualify for the seeded women’s 800 meter run with both Emily McCarthy, SC East, and Molly Cashman, Waverly Shell Rock, making the cut. McCarthy finished second in her heat with a season-best time of 2:13.32 while Cashman finished with season-best time of 2:16.20.

“Our freshmen are improving at a fast pace and our veterans are showing poise in the heat of battle,” Steele said. “This is a fun team. We’ll keep things fast and loose right through the conference meet.”

The Panthers will return to action when they host their final meet before the MVC Indoor Championships. The UNI-Dome Open is set for Friday Feb. 15 and will start with the first event at 1:00 p.m.
