Two Cyclones set Iowa State school records on day three of the Iowa State Classic in the Lied Recreation Center Saturday.  Betsy Saina smashed the 5,000-meter run school record with a time of 15:21.66. In doing so, the 2012 NCAA cross country champion eclipsed the world’s fastest time in that event in 2013 by more than 22 seconds.

Previously the school record was 15:29.65, by ISU coach Lisa Uhl, Ft. Dodge, in 2010. Saina’s time is the fifth-fastest ever run by a collegiate woman indoors. On an oversize track, the Cyclone’s clocking trails only the all-time best of 15:01.70 by former Colorado and 2011 world indoor 1,500-meter gold medalist Jenny Barringer, Webster City, set in 2009.

Saina has the current #1 time in the WORLD for 5000 Meters. This was also the 5th fastest time ever run by a collegiate.

Obviously, when Betsy steps on the track, we expect big things,” Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. “Still, this is special, one of the best times ever.”

Iowa State’s Laishema Hampton also broke her own school record and won the weight throw with a mark of 67-03.25.  Her previous best was 65-04.25. Teammate Danielle Frere, Muscatine, placed sixth with 60-00.50

“Our throwers came through from us across the board,” Ihmels said.

Sprinter Nick Efkamp, Madrid, won the 200-meter dash, clocking in with 21.18. The time ranks second in Iowa State history, trailing only the 21.16 effort, set by Frank Nwankpa in 1997.

Ryan Sander, Cr Xavier, won the 60-meter hurdles final in a time of 7.94.  Ian Warner tied for first with Sean King from Minnesota with a time of 6.77 in the 60-meter dash final.

Cyclone Edward Kemboi placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.19.  Jacob Aune, CR Prairie, (1:50.58) and Chris Avarez (1:55.46) competed unattached, placing sixth and 13th, respectively.

In other women’s competition, Cyclone Ese Okoro won the 600-yard dash.  Okoro (1:21.41), Krista Shoeman, Johnston, (1:21.65), and Dana Christenson, Belmond-Klemme, (1:22.78) all set new personal best times.  Teammate Donnise Powell placed seventh.

Jumper Hannah Willms, Dike-New Hartford, placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-04.50.

Iowa State hosts the 2013 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 22-23 in the Lied Center.
