Gavin Warnock, Perry,  soared to top honors in the long jump to lead the way for the Grinnell College men’s track and field team at Saturday’s Darren Young Classic.

  • Warnock leaped 21-4 at the Charles Benson Bear ’39 Recreation and Athletic Center Field House to beat the runner-up by 2 inches in the 19-jumper field.
  • The Pioneers got a seventh-place finish from the 4×200-meter relay team of Ronald Edwards, Dixon Romeo, David Garwood, and Warnock in a time of 1:35.84, while the 4×400 relay squad of Quinton Banks, Zack Angel, Nate Kolacia, Ft. Dodge St. Edmond, and Kyle Moorehead, Grinnell, was eighth in 3:34.65.
  • The Pioneers had a strong finish in the 800, as Kolacia placed eighth in 1:59.86, Angel took ninth in 2:00.59 and Moorehead wound up 11th in 2:00.85.
  • Frank Canady, IC West, was ninth in the 3000 in 9:05.86 and Erik Figge, placed 18th in 9:22.78.
  • Grinnell was ninth in the team standings with 10 points. Augustana College won the team title, topping runner-up Central College 131-94.

The Pioneers will compete at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly next Saturday.

Simpson at Grinnell
  • Aaron Arment, West Marshall, won two events and placed second in a third to lead the Simpson men’s track and field team to a fourth place finish at Grinnell’s Darren Young Classic on Saturday.
  • Augustana ran away with the team title with 131 points, followed by Central (94), Wartburg (87) and Simpson (72).
  • A sophomore transfer, Arment broke 7 seconds in the 60-meter dash for the second straight week. After placing second at Cornell’s Hilltop Invite last Saturday with a 6.96, he won this week after crossing the line in 6.99 seconds. He also placed second in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 22.74 seconds.
  • Arment was also a pivotal part of Simpson’s winning 4×200-meter relay. He ran the lead leg and was joined by Brad Vogel, Central Lee, Tyler Kenny, Ridgeview, and Brice Sheeder, Adair Casey, finishing in 1:32.30.
  • Josh Diehm, Waterloo West, provided a second-place effort in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 and ¾ inches.
  • Vogel chipped in a third-place finish in the 60 (7.09) and a fourth-place effort in the 200 (23.12), John Cord, Atlantic, placed fourth in the long jump (21-1 ½) and fifth in the triple jump (43-0 ½), Jake Sutton, WDM Valley, placed fifth in the 5,000 meters (15:44.23) and John WarnkeDubuque Sr., placed sixth in the 3,000.


The Simpson women’s track and field team saw three events take home top three finishes as the Storm placed eighth at Grinnell’s Darren Young Classic on Saturday.

  • Nebraska Wesleyan narrowly won the team title with 105 points, followed by Wartburg (102), Augustana (68), Bethel (55), Grinnell (42), Central (38.5), Cornell (37.5) and Simpson (26).
  • Bayley Fleshner led the Storm with a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 9.424 seconds.
  • Fleshner also helped the Storm to a third place finish in the 4×200-meter relay, teaming with April Sigmund, South Hamilton, Lauren Martin, Forest City, and Jordan MaherCMB Baxter to cross the line in 1:48.68.
  • Sigmund added another third-place effort in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 60.92 seconds.

Next up for Simpson is the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa on Feb. 15.
