Big First Day For Bulldog Men at ISU

Ames, Iowa — The Drake University men’s track and field team received a great showing from its field athletes, with five finishes in the top 10 of their respective events Friday at the ISU Classic at the Lied Recreational Center.

Freshman Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) cleared the highest bar in the high jump at  6-6.25 but finished sixth on misses. Teammate and fellow freshman Scott Goad (Dixon, Ill.) was ninth in the event jumping 6-4.25.

Junior Alex Kaster (Omaha, Neb.) was fifth in the triple jump, with a jump of 44-11.50. Junior Andy Curtis (Manchester, Iowa) was eighth in the unseeded flight of the weight throw with a toss of 57-00.75. Senior teammate Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) will compete in the seeded weight throw Saturday at 11 a.m.

Senior Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) rounded out the successes in the field events with a 10th-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 21-11.75. Goad was 28th in the event, jumping 20-00.25.

Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) had the most impressive showing on the track for the Bulldogs in the first day of competition. The junior missed the finals by just six one-hundreths of a second in the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 8.22.

Marsh also sprinted to a top-20 finish in the 200 meter dash, finishing 18th in 22.27. Freshman Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas.) won his heat in the event, crossing the line in 22.37.

Junior Justin Welch (Des Moines, Iowa) was 50th in the 60 meters in 7.29.

Freshman James Saxton (LaCross, Wis.) had the best showing in the distance events for the squad, placing 15th in the 800 meters in 1:54.91. He was joined by junior Tyler Nelson (Lone Tree, Colo.), who finished 38th in 2:02.26.

Senior Michael Rodriguez (Chanhassen, Minn.) finished 19th in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:15.43. Freshman Ali Jandal (LaCross, Wis.) was 33rd in the event in 16:20.95

Saturday will see junior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) compete in the seeded 3,000 meters and Twombly in the seeded weight throw. Both events are set to start at 11 a.m. at the Lied Recreational Center on the campus of Iowa State.
