The University of Northern Iowa track and field program opened the Iowa State Classic today with Ethan Miller, Seymour HS, finishing the day in the lead of the men’s heptathlon.

Miller finished in first place in three out of the four events that he competed in tonight, accumulating 3,210 points. This is the first time this season that Miller has competed in heptathlon after transferring from Central College where he won three NCAA Division III titles in the decathlon.

“Ethan did a terrific job today and competed really well,” head track and field coach Dan Steele said. “But there are two days in every heptathlon, so we are staying focused for tomorrow. As long as he stays focused it is going to be an excellent second day as well.”

Miller posted a first place finish in the 60 meter dash, coming away with a personal record time of 6.99 in the event. Miller also notched a personal record in the shot put by two meters finishing with a distance of 42-05.25.

Miller took first in the high jump with a team best height of 6-08.00. He followed up that performance with a first place finish in the long jump with a distance of 23-02.50.

Miller will complete the heptathlon starting today, Friday, at 9:00 a.m. with the 60 meter hurdles. Miller will be joined by the rest of the Panthers with the first event starting at 11:00 a.m.
