Runablaze: “Catching Up on Last Minute 2012 Races”

runablazeRob Duncan won the Jingle Bell Rock ‘n Run 5K (Des Moines, Dec. 9) in 16:30.

Nate Hopp won the Vinton Tour DeLights 5K (Dec. 9) in 17:42.  Nate relates, “I ran my first race since breaking the third metatarsal in my foot back on July 14th at the Lake Geode Triathlon (as part of a relay team, running the 10k).”  The Vinton race was closer to 3.25 miles and in the dark.  Nate continues, “It was a night race and hard to see where I was going at times, but I felt great and had no pain in the foot I broke.”

Chan Yew Woo turned down a offer to run the 14th Asian Marathon Championship in Hong Kong (Feb. 24).  Chan had surgery on his left knee at the U of Iowa Hospital (Oct. 5) and is restricted from running for a few months, not leaving enough time to properly train for the marathon.

Jason Flogel reveals more about the California Marathon (Sacramento, Dec. 2), ” The weather was horrible, 25-40mph winds and lots of rain. Easily the nastiest weather I’ve ever raced in. I was trying to break into the top five by running from behind and working my way up. I ended up just breaking the wind for four others from mile 4 through 20.”  Jason admits, “While my effort and motives were great . . . it was a poor choice of strategy for that day.”  Matt Dewald, former teammate now living in Denver, ran a 2:23:55, a few places ahead of Jason.

Just for the record Iowa High School XC runners placed at national meets.  Stephanie Jenks (girls 4A champ – Linn Mar) was 41st at the Nike Team Nationals (Portland, Dec. 1).  At the same meet Dowling Boys finished 19th team lead by Jason Thomas in 73rd.  The meet was run in severe mud and puddles.  At the Foot Locker nationals (San Diego, Dec. 8) Anna Holdman (girls 3A champ – Waverly Shell Rock) finished 7th.
