Wartburg Women Setting the Bar Higher

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.– The Wartburg women’s cross country team finished as the National Runner-Up at the NCAA National Championships this morning.  The Knights placed second with 221 team points as Johns Hopkins claimed the team title with 158 points. The Orange and Black were tied for eighth in the most recent USTFCCCA Top 30 coaches poll, released Nov. 12.

The second-place finish marks a new best for the program at the National Championships, having previously placed as high as third three times in 1991, 1992 and 2002.  “We ran really well today and the women are really excited with how they finished,” said head coach Steve Johnson.  Sophomore Alana Enabnit (Clear Lake) finished seventh (21:24.8) to claim her

second All-American honor of her young career and second consecutive honor as she placed tenth last year.  Junior Sammi Bruett (Urbandale) tied for 13th (21:31.7) and received All-American honors. She also moved up two spots on the all-time best performance list to No. 4 with her time.  This marked the second consecutive year of multiple All-Americans and fourth time in program history.  Classmate Haddie Vawter (Union) took 49th (22:17.1) and sophomore Erin Sawyers (Winterset) placed 111th (22:51.1).  Classmate Morgan Gerdes (Waterloo) took 140th (23:02.3), senior Kirsten Youngberg (Pocahontas) took 171st (23:16.2) and junior Lauren Mapes (Earlham) rounded out the team finishers as she placed 227th (23:47.6).  Vawter moved up five spots and Gerdes improved eight spots on the all-time best list.
