Roy Griak Preview

This Saturday, September 29, marks the running of the 27th Roy Griak Invitational held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the University of Minnesota campus.  “The Griak” named in honor of long time Gopher coach Roy Griak, has had a long history of hosting a very large number of teams, university through high school, along with some of the best competition in the nation.   This year’s version will be no different.

There will be over 80 teams in the men’s competition spread out over 3 divisional races.  Gold (D-1), Maroon 2 (D-2) and Maroon 3 (D-3).  Over 90 women’s teams will take part in the same three divisions.

There are over 100 each, high school boys and girls teams from around the Midwest entered as well.  Both genders are split into two races each, Gold and Maroon.

This cross country extravaganza gets underway at 9:00 AM on Saturday with the Maroon 3 Women’s race and a full day of activity winds up at 4:30 with the high school girls Maroon race.

There are 18 colleges or universities running Saturday with a total of 133 former Iowa preps on their rosters!  Very impressive for us!

The Iowa State women figure to be in the hunt for the Gold title while their male counterparts and the Iowa men hope to be near the front of the men’s title chase.

Minnesota State Mankato Men are led by 3 former Iowans, Josh Mellman, Rockwell Swaledale, Devin Allbaugh, Pleasant Valley, and Matt Stocker, CR Prairie.  They come into the weekend as the Maroon 2 favorites.

In the Maroon 3 divisions the Wartburg women and Wartburg and Central men, all three with squads dominated by former Iowa preps, look to make a strong run for a trophy.

In high school cross country, the Midwest can hold its own against any other region in the country and many of the top runners will be at Griak.

The Dowling Catholic girls’ team will be out to win their 4th consecutive Griak crown!

It is going to be a fun, action packed Saturday in the Twin Cities and The Next Level Iowa is proud to be there and will have pictures and stories galore!
