Former Iowa Prep Joins the DI Coaching Ranks!: Shayla Houlihan

Former SC East and UNI standout Shayla Houlihan hung up her competitive spikes after competing at the Olympic Trials earlier this month, and has taken a full time coaching position at the University of California-Berkeley.  Houlihan moved herself up the ladder as an athlete and retired from a very successful career as a top US steeplechaser.

With Cal being a member of the Pac-12, this job offers “unpaid” benefits as well.   Houlihan’s younger sister, Shelby, is a standout cross country performer and middle distance ace at Arizona State.  Shayla was also a Grad Assistant at Utah while training under Ute’s head coach and former Iowa prep, Kyle Kepler.  Both ASU and Utah are members of the Pac-12.

Houlihan begins her new job August 1st.  She will be working with Bears Head Coach Tony Sandoval in coaching the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams, Middle and Long Distance runners and playing a major role in recruiting.   Shayla is replacing Ann Detmer, a former Wisconsin All American, who has decided to give a professional running career a try.

Good luck Shayla!  The Next Level Iowa is very proud of you!
